Deck stain doesn't last forever. Sun, rain, and foot traffic break it down over time, and once protection fails the wood underneath is at risk. Here are the signs it's time to refinish.
1. Fading and graying
When the rich color washes out and the wood looks gray and dull, the stain is no longer protecting the surface from UV damage.
2. Water no longer beads
Splash some water on the boards. If it soaks in instead of beading up, the protective layer has worn away and moisture is getting into the wood.
3. Cracking, splintering, or rough spots
Dry, cracked, or splintering boards signal that the wood is losing moisture and needs to be cleaned, sanded, and re-stained before damage spreads.
4. Peeling or blotchy finish
An uneven, peeling finish is a clear sign the old coating is breaking down and the deck needs to be refinished properly.
5. It's been more than 2–3 years
Even if it looks okay, most decks in New England benefit from re-staining every two to three years to stay protected through harsh winters.
